But does the creative risk pay off?
Run the Gauntlet (RTG) is a free monthly program where one lucky writer receives a developmental edit of their opening scenes. The feedback is recorded in real-time, on-screen and then posted publicly so that other writers can share in the insights garnered.
In this live critique:
“The Viper” introduces us to Mike and Haruko, two young lovers whose lives are about to be changed forever by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour.
Ben is an innovative, experimental writer, and I selected his project because it presented some interesting opportunities to explore the balance between writing style and creative strategy. Specifically:
- How to balance style elements like creative expression and experimentation, versus strategic elements like character and plot.
- Making a statement with your character introduction. Is our hero introverted, but bold? Is our heroine sweet, or manipulative?
- Pacing your story: how much action is too much?
- Managing the balance of information: how much does a reader need to know at the start of a story? Are we deepening their knowledge with every scene, or going over the same ground?
