This process has been likened to a one-on-one writing workshop geared to your opening chapters, specifically. Through careful analysis and actionable feedback, I'll show you how to introduce your character and plot premise to readers in a compelling and impactful manner. This is an essential step prior to publishing or sending samples to agents and publishers. In short, because it’s the best way for me to offer as much value as possible. The feedback I share via voice recording would easily translate into a 15+ page written report. Recordings allow me to dig deeper into a wider range of issues, in a concise and personable manner.
Your voice recording will answer questions like:
- Is my protagonist compelling?
- Is the premise filled with intrigue?
- Is the pace and structure effective?
- Does the style and tone suit the genre and target readership?
- Is the current hook strong enough to attract the interest of an agent or publisher?
- What kind of story updates would solve the issues identified?
- What kind of development will best serve the draft at this stage?
- What’s the cost and timeline moving forward, and what kind of deliverables will I receive?
- Most importantly, what are clear, actionable ways for me to improve my scenes?
I’m usually able to return the edit to you within seven working days.
As a developmental editor, it’s harder to provide effective feedback on a fragment of your story that’s being read out of context. For that reason, the only ‘excerpt’ edits I offer focus on the opening hook, specifically.
If your opening chapter/s exceed the word limit by a few hundred words, I’m happy to read the addition at no extra fee. If you want to send a significantly longer excerpt, feel free to contact me with your request.
