LIVE CRITIQUE: A Riveting Crime Plot, But Who’s Our Hero?

crime fiction live critique

In this episode, it’s “Lights, Character, Action!”

Run the Gauntlet (RTG) is a free monthly program where one lucky writer receives a developmental edit of their opening scenes. The feedback is recorded in real-time, on-screen and then posted publicly so that other writers can share in the insights garnered.

In this live critique:

A big thanks to Ruth for sharing the opening scenes of her crime fiction. “Hot Rocks” introduces us to Leigh, a police officer who is about to make a horrific discovery. The scene has a lot to deliver, with significant moments of tension, action, and grief.

This episode of RTG looks at:

  • Finding the balance between important context, versus overwhelming the reader with too much detail.
  • Weaving insights into the scene that allow us to empathize with the character before the action consumes all our focus.
